But you can use his attacks to your advantage, as some blocks can only be destroyed by Bowser and open up access to secret areas, power-ups and more Cat Shines. This is Bowser as you’ve never seen him before, a giant enraged Godzilla-like version of Mario’s arch-nemesis that throws red hot spikes (that can be used as platforms) and fires beams at you. Howling wind, heavy rain and thumping metal music all kick in, signalling the coming of Fury Bowser. While the majority of the experience is a whimsical free-roaming adventure, periodically the cute cat-themed world then becomes a dark dangerous nightmare. You can even interact with items in the environment like an ice-skating boot, a Piranha Plant you can pick up and use and even a Goomba mask, adding more variety than ever before. You can also pick-up boxes that Mario wears on his head for new abilities like the Propeller Box and the Cannon Box. The Captain Toad puzzle-based levels (which inspired their own spin-off game) provide a really nice change of pace when compared to the more chaotic regular levels. One power-up that makes the game more inclusive for youngsters and new players is the White Tanooki suit that makes you invincible, which is a great idea. The Double Cherry power-up clones you and you can pick up additional cherries that add more duplicates.Ĭlassic power-ups also return, including old favourites like the Super Leaf, the Tanooki Suit from Super Mario Bros 3 and the iconic Fire Flower that lets Mario spit fireballs. Mario has some handy power-ups at his fingertips with the Super Bell that turns Mario into a cat hybrid allowing him to climb walls, dive in the air and scratch foes. Mario is a great all-rounder, Luigi can jump high, Toad can move very fast and Peach has her hover ability reminiscent of Super Mario 2 on the NES. Each level has three green stars to find as well as stamps for you to collect.Įach playable character has unique abilities, making some better suited to certain courses. Some levels feel very different from one another, as some require timing or teamwork with one of my favourite levels being inspired by Mario Kart. Parts of the island are covered in this goop, as well as a lighthouse tower that you can clean up by collecting magical Cat Shines, objects that function like Shine Sprites from Mario Sunshine or Moons from Mario Odyssey. The two agree to team up to clean up the island and save Bowser. who tells him Bowser has been corrupted by the dark goop and it has transformed him into the enraged Fury Bowser. While in Bowser's Fury, it begins with Mario walking in a field, when a puddle of black goop drops our hero into the cat-themed island of Lake Lapcat. It’s not much of a story, but at least for once Princess Peach gets a break from being kidnapped. The four off them then jump into the pipe to go rescue the six Sprixie Princesses from Bowser. Mario, Luigi, Toad and Princess Peach find a magical glass pipe and after investigating, a fairy-like creature called a Sprixie emerges and asks for help before being snatched up by the nefarious Bowser. This enhanced port features some minor tweaks and new content in the form of Bowser's Fury, a whole new stand-alone experience, separate from 3D World, that plays very differently.
